Don’t Let Unpleasant Odors to Spoil the Atmosphere at Home – Learn How to Deodorize Your Curtains and Carpets

Most of the daily activities is the reason of stubborn stains and odors on your carpet, especially if your have small children or pets. It is important to start removing the stains as soon as they appear. The longer the stain remains on the carpet, the harder it is cleaned. On the market, there are many stain removers but some people prefer more natural remedies for cleaning stains. Vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda are natural agents that perfectly deodorize the carpet.

The reasons of smells

The smells on your carpet carpets may be different, and the cleaning methods will be different, as well.

  1. Pets or small child urinated on the carpet.
  2. Someone spilled a lot of fragrant liquid on the carpet.
  3. It was flooded because of the burst pipe or leaking roofs.
  4. Fungus and mold have appeared.
  5. The reproduction of bacteria or parasites.
  6. The smell of paint and glue are the smells of a new carpet.

How to deodorize the carpet

Buying a new carpet, we are faced with the unpleasant feature of many new things, a heavy chemical smell. Usually, it goes away within just a couple of days, but what if you cannot endure it or you suffer from allergies? First, try to get rid of the smell in the simplest way – by airing. To hang the carpet in the open air avoiding direct sunlight not to burn out the carpet. If the carpet is made without violating the process and of a quality material, the smell will go away within a day, maximum two.

If a chemical smell still remains, it’s up to you to decide what to do next. If you cannot hang it outdoors, then evenly sprinkle ordinary baking soda on the carpet. Yes, you will need many, probably a few, packs. And most importantly – do not step on the carpet, or later, it will be difficult to clear the pile of powder. Usually, the odor absorption requires about 12 hours, so it is better to do it before night. And then, thoroughly vacuum it in the morning.


Different smells

Carpets can absorb all kinds of odors, and sometimes they are very unpleasant. To remove the smell from the carpet in such cases, you need to spray it with a vinegar solution, take it and water in a ratio of 1: 1 and give it a good dry. For the light surfaces, use a weak solution of chlorine bleach diluted in water.

You can make a deodorizer by your own hands. Take the following:

  • a cup of chopped dried herbs (such as rosemary or lavender),
  • cloves, 1 tsp,
  • cinnamon, 1 tsp,
  • baking soda, 1 tsp.

Mix all ingredients and sprinkle the resulting dry mixture over the surface of the carpet. After a few minutes, vacuum the covering again removing all particles of the mixture.

There are other recipes for creating a carpet deodorizer

  1. Add a little of your favorite essential oil to the matchbox with baking soda and sprinkle it on the carpet. After 10-20 minutes, thoroughly vacuum the surface.
  2. Mix a cup both of baking soda and corn starch, add 15 drops of an essential oil. Sprinkle the carpet with the resulting mixture, let it soak for 10-20 minutes, and then clean the covering.

The smell of an old carpet

If your old carpet that served you many years has an unpleasant smell, the reason is fungi, mold and bacteria living in dirty stains. The main reason for their appearance is a high humidity. Maybe, you wash your carpet too often or use too much detergent. Maybe, you just spilled the water or there is animal urine. In such cases, the soda will not help and you have to apply special agents for cleaning.

In most cases, it is necessary to dissolve and apply the soap on the surface. There are cleaners in the form of aerosols, which are very easy to use. Before you start removing the caused by mold, you should use a special mixture of liquid mold inhibitor, and only then proceed to the washing with a detergent. The time of cleaning depends mostly on the size and density of the carpet pile.

The smell of urine

To get rid of the smell of the cat or children's urine, it is not necessary to buy special means for washing carpets. Sometimes a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and dish detergent or liquid soap, taken in equal proportions, with an addition of a little of baking soda is enough to wash the fresh stain. If the urine had enough time to soak deep into the carpet, then leave the mixture for half an hour. Then thoroughly wash and dry.

A yellow soap is very effective against cat and dog urine because it contains glycerin, which splits urea well. You can rub the stain with both a bar soap and soap solution. Then you can treat the stain with alcohol or vodka, which removes the remaining trace of the odor and stains.

You can apply a mixture based on water and lemon juice, mixed one to one, or a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide in a ratio 1: 1.


How not to remove the smell from carpets

  1. It is not recommended to spray perfume and other products as they will mix and the smell will be even worse.
  2. Do not use turpentine or gasoline because the smell of these agents will add to the bad smells.
  3. Before using the smell remover, clean and vacuum the carpet.

How to deodorize curtains

Curtains create a cozy warm atmosphere in the house. However, they often absorb odors. And not always these smells are pleasant. What if normal washing does not help to get rid of them? Moreover, it is not easy to wash them every time.

  1. Not to wash the curtains of the cigarette smell every time, put an aroma lamp near the window or hang the curtains in the bathroom, put a basin filled with hot water and vinegar, and close the door. Be careful while removing the odors of the synthetic fabric. The cloth can react to soda, vinegar or alcohol negatively. It can lose color or even be damaged.
  2. When washing, you can use baking soda (instead of powder). Add 1 cup to the washing machine. Wash at the maximum temperature for your fabric, it removes the bad odor completely.
  3. To keep the curtains fresh, try to ventilate and keep in the sun more often: the sun rays can kill some of the chemicals that cause unpleasant odors.
  4. Odor neutralizer sprays help to eliminate the smell. They not only remove odors but also leave behind a delicate fragrance. Carefully spray the curtains along the entire length.
  5. Soda solution will destroy even the most powerful and persistent odors. You can treat the stains with the solution before washing.
  6. To get rid of the smell of mold, fill the basin with warm water and add vinegar (1 tablespoon per 1 liter of water). Vinegar can be replaced by lemon juice. Soak the curtains for 1-2 hours. Then rinse and wash. Dry in a well-ventilated place. There is another way, as well. You can soak the curtains in a solution of vinegar and detergent (1: 1) for 30-40 minutes. Then wash them using laundry detergent, and then dry in the sun in a well-ventilated area.
  7. If there is a home steam cleaner. With the help of hot steam that comes under a lot of pressure, you can remove any unpleasant odors while cleaning the curtains.
  8. On the window sills or just behind the curtains, hang the fragrant bags of gauze or linen. Dry the crust of lemon and orange in the oven, and then mix them with coffee beans or dried flowers. Add the cinnamon stick and a little vanilla and sprinkle the mixture into the prepared bags. To enhance the flavor, drop a little essential oil into the bags.
  9. These simple tips will help you to effectively get rid of unpleasant odors in the apartment. However, you should never forget that regular airing and careful treatment is the main way to get rid of unpleasant odors.
